We do! By Timothy Bellavia, M.F.A., Susan Courey, Ph.D. and Roslyn Haber, Ed.DWhy does math anxiety strike fear into the heart of many students all over the world? Math anxiety is not merely a dislike for the subject; it is a tangible problem for students that can block working memory and math achievement. As early as kindergarten, math anxiety can begin a self-perpetuating cycle of math avoidance, failure, and fear. Despite the prevalence of math anxiety throughout many students’ schooling, it can be mitigated by more effective early mathematics curriculum that addresses the learning needs of all students and an improvement in teachers’ professional development with new content and teaching techniques.
To address the need for more effective and the improvement in teachers’ mathematics understanding and pedagogy, we have designed an integrated music, mathematics, and computational thinking curriculum that teachers can implement in inclusive classrooms of cognitively, linguistically, and culturally diverse students. Our novel integrated curriculum called Young Academic Music (YAM) and Computational Thinking begins with guided musical play activities to stimulate natural curiosity and exploration in the academic areas of mathematics, music, and computational thinking. Research suggests that strong math skills and computational thinking in young children are a powerful predictor of future academic success. Therefore, we focus on developing early mathematics skills with music and gradually move toward computational thinking. By starting with music and playing with dolls and fun manipulatives, we have created a less intimidating environment that is more accessible to all learners, including students with disabilities, English learners, or other youth who have struggled in more traditional mathematics classrooms.
This novel program integrates mathematics, music, and computational thinking in an engaging way for kindergartner students, teachers, and parents. Young children will learn rhythm and music notation, while fun and creative activities will provide structured opportunities for students to connect math skills to music and computational thinking at an early age. The foundation of this integrated curriculum is the design of appropriate learning activities and supporting materials that can easily be integrated in inclusive classrooms along with ongoing teacher support.
Have I lost you yet? Does it all sound too simple, too complicated, or too scientific? Let’s get this straight - when we, as somewhat more typical educators, think about our relationship with mathematics and music, our palms grow clammy. I, like many of us educators, struggle with self-doubt about my ability to implement a curriculum that combines three subjects (mathematics, music, and computational thinking) in which I must admit very little expertise. And yes, I even have this historical reaction of mathematics, music, and computational thinking: the fear of failure. Our head starts spinning round and round like a vinyl record as a bunch of unanswerable mathematical and musical questions stare me down.
Imagine my anxiety when Dr. Courey and Dr. Haber asked me to develop characters and note dolls for this novel curriculum for a long-term research study for the early childhood level? That’s how I was roped into this five years ago. Thanks to Dr. Haber, we started our pilot study at Daniel’s Music Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides music activities for students with disabilities of all ages, my anxiety melted away. My initial fears were replaced with excitement, fun, and absolute bliss. The note dolls were a hit and the participants varying in abilities and strengths were counting, adding, and subtracting through rhythm lessons. All of the students in the class were making music, learning music notation, and having fun with computational thinking activities!
Almost, three years into the research that old devil called self-doubt rears its head: “I can’t do math, I don’t like math, math is too hard, or will I ever use it in the “real world.” Yet with each phase of this research and the unquestionable obstacles, such as the COVID 19 lockdown, time and again the teachers we work with as well as the students no longer expressed their fear or disdain for mathematics. As educators and now part of an Education Innovation Research (EIR) grant team, I must acknowledge, we now play a vital role in helping remove the stigma surrounding mathematics and anxiety by making math instruction fun for students and teachers? The outcomes we are measuring are teachers’ ability to understand and implement the curriculum, student math achievement, music understanding, and computational thinking. We are observing and measuring these outcomes to inform and support a strong and engaging kindergarten curriculum that reduce math anxiety, open the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) to all students. And we, our teachers, and students are having way too much fun!

Recently I was in attendance at the #artRAVE in New York’s Madison Square Garden featuring none other than Lady Ga Ga and minions of little monsters. It was dreamlike. Each fan was dressed in various ways to pay tribute to their own success and uniqueness. It is without question Ga Ga and her little monsters (as she calls her fans) need each other. She has created her very own planet where she can exist and have an exchange between herself and her high paying and loyal fans. Hardly the aloof diva of days of yore, Lady Ga Ga’s is unquestionably present for her audience. As the show progressed and the costumes got more outrageous I thought of my own fascination as a middle aged monster. Suddenly, I am 15 again and as Lady Ga Ga blew a kiss to the crowd and I catch it and hear Miss Diana Ross's echoes of "I love you all.” Here I stand aging in a sea of youthful little monsters and once again I believe, "It’s going to be all alright”. I threw away my troubles kept dancing so I didn’t have to feel the pain of life and the embraced fully the pursuits of peace and love. For me Ga Ga is one of a select few pop sensations who aggressively creates art, shouts-out words of hope and genuinely loves her public. It’s like a great escape for both parties. She includes and made all feel welcome to be themselves on her special theatrical stage that looks like it is from another world. Yet her humanity is down to earth and her stage banter is genuine, “I saw your post on twitter, girl” Ga Ga explains. My mind raced to when Diana Ross used to fearlessly dive out into her audience and reach out and touch her own fan base. In the midst of an economic crisis Lady Gaga creates songs of inspiration and self-affirmation for a new era depression. Even if it’s to the detriment of her own finances Ga Ga will follow her art. Be it her latest digital download or video Ga Ga’s little monsters (and my middle aged self) have embraced her hope and are inspired to create a universe that may not be as prosperous as our parents’ generation. .But until then we will be humming, dancing along in the hope that our dreams of art and peace will see us through to forever. Is peace possible? Is hope still alive? The dreamy platform created by the seemingly fearless Lady Ga Ga is the best of what humanity has to offer where all peoples on this very planet come together and celebrate. Until then, it is for certain that these little monsters will develop a strong sense of self and undeniable enthusiasm for living … or at least for their next Lady Ga Ga fix or tour.Sagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16070666174115694055noreply@blogger.com0New York, NY, USA40.7056308 -73.978003540.3204428 -74.6234505 41.0908188 -73.3325565tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2510626805077944680.post-34760700238452370592014-01-30T06:50:00.002-08:002014-01-30T07:14:45.018-08:00RE: 'We Are All The Same Inside' ® Sage doll-making workshop joining forces with 'It's OK to be Different' at 2014 National Conference on Bullying!Dear Family, Friends and Colleagues

Both award winning educators focus on celebrating differences, promoting acceptance and peace within the classroom and beyond.
After meeting initially on Facebook and then at an American Girl / We Are All The Same Inside ®doll-making event in Greenwich, CT in the spring of 2012, both agreed that the philosophy behind their programs brought them together.
Now, Laraine Gaunt and Timothy Bellavia will team up to debut Bellavia’s new Sage doll – making workshop, The Words Remain Inside: Bullying Stops Here! at Tower Hill School in Red Bank, NJ where Gaunt currently presents It’s OK to be Different. The event will be held on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 10 am.
This new workshop is a spin-off of the popular We Are All The Same Inside® book and accompanying Sage doll, yet has participants go beyond the surface in a special bully prevention workshop for children in which students create a doll with the outside skin as well as the interior organs; but use a permanent marker with hurtful words. The dolls then will be collected and washed with detergent and presented. The results will show that despite all the detergent and fabric softener the words remain inside, thus displaying the concept and a project based approach to combat bullying that reinforces dignity for all.
With recent news about clashing religions, online and campus bullying that leads to suicide, and continuing skirmishes about immigration and basic human rights, The Words Remain Inside: Bullying Stops Here! and It’s OK to be Different affirm the need to promote tolerance at a young age.

With humor and insight, he describes the events of that day (his brain exploded just before his brother’s wedding!), as well as the long, difficult recovery period. In the process, he introduces readers to his family—his principal support group, as well as a constant source of frustration and amazement. Irreverent, coruscating, angry, at times shocking, but always revelatory, his memoir takes the reader into unfamiliar territory, much like the experience Alice had when she fell down the rabbit hole. That he lived to tell the story is miraculous; that he tells it with such aplomb is simply remarkable.

More than a decade later he has finally reestablished a productive artistic life for himself, still dealing with the effects of his injury—life-long half-blindness and epilepsy— but forging ahead as a survivor dedicated to helping others who have suffered a similar catastrophe.

About Ashok Rajamani

Ashok Rajamani lives in New York City. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
1ST ANNUAL VISUAL ART AND JAZZ OUTDOOR ART FAIR RESCHEDULED
GUGGENHEIM FELLOW AND 2011 NEA JAZZ MASTER RANDY WESTON TO PERFORM
VISUAL ARTS AND JAZZFEST 2012—10TH ANNUAL CELEBRATION
Harlem, New York, August 22, 2012 –On Saturday, September 8th, 11 am – 7 pm, Artist and Curator Gwendolyn Black continues her annual Visual Arts and Jazzfest 2012 with the 1st Annual Visual Arts and Jazz Outdoor Art Fair headlined by Guggenheim Fellow and NEA Jazz Master Pianist Randy Weston.
The fair is rescheduled to take place at the Jackie Robinson Park Bandshell in Harlem at 147th Street and Bradhurst. The event will include art and photography for sale, food tastings, performances, live art, arts and crafts, along with health and wellness information.
The fair will feature some of today’s outstanding visual artists who are dedicated to supporting and preserving jazz music through their work. The fair will also include performances by many popular local jazz artists and poets.
After contributing six decades of musical direction and genius, Randy Weston remains one of the world's foremost pianists and composers today, and is a true innovator and visionary. Encompassing the vast rhythmic heritage of Africa, his global creations musically continue to inform and inspire. "Weston has the biggest sound of any jazz pianist since Ellington and Monk, as well as the richest most inventive beat," states jazz critic Stanley Crouch, "but his art is more than projection and time; it's the result of a studious and inspired intelligence...an intelligence that is creating a fresh synthesis of African elements with jazz technique".
Visual artists include Sir Shadow whose “one line-one flow” jazz drawings continue to captivate audiences everywhere and artist and author Timothy D. Bellavia whose book “We Are All the Same Inside” is making an international buzz along with acclaimed artists Tafa, Sadikisha Collier, Carol Weaver, Joan Chiverton, Daren Chambers, Alfred Weeks, Frank James, James Gethers, John Van Means, Jackie Hicks, Grace Derrick, photographer Hubert Williams, jeweler Ali, wearable arts by Debra Lynn White, producer/art consultant Loris Crawford of “Off The Main” and others.
Performers included are The Bill Saxon Quartet and Atiba Kwabena's BeFo Quotet both whose musical artistry and legacy has been an important part of the New York and Harlem landscape; blues guitarist Myer Rossabi has performed at BB Kings and his debut CD “Blues is the Color” has been played on FM Radio across the US; native Pittsburgher’s Rochelle Thompson and Anthony Thompson. Ms. Thompson, who is a familiar face on the arts and culture scene here in New York, has performed internationally and throughout the NYC area and has opened for such artists as Joe Williams, David Sanborn, Ahmad Jamal, Danny Mixon and others. Anthony Thompson, who is an award winning actor, is best known for his Langston Huges’ Jesse B. Semple Blues and Jazz Alive in Harlem series which debuted here in New York at Jazz @ Lincoln Center along with Brooklyn based singing sensation Mekka Timberlake; Poets included are Layding Kaliba (who assisted with pulling the fair together) and Tony Mitchelson of the Linyak Project with guest poets David Mills, Lora Renee Tucker, Tanya Tyler, Tom Mitchelson, E.J. Antonio, and Gary Johnston along with poet/artist Nikki Williams who is currently touring her exhibition, “Beautiful, Also, are the Souls of My People.”
On hand will be Harlem Hospital’s Stop Smoking Program and MetroPlus Healthcare who will provide health and wellness information along with Countee Cullen Library who will be sharing books on jazz for young people. Families can join us in the arts and crafts tent where they can explore their own creativity and create their very own project dedicated to jazz.
Artist and curator Gwendolyn Black was inspired to create Visual Arts and Jazzfest, now in its 10th year, to further bring to the public’s eye the importance of so many visual artists who are dedicated to preserving jazz through their work. “Displaying the artists’ work through public venues such as this increases the economic base for the artists as well as enables the public to connect one on one with them states Black. Looking back it is amazing how far we have come and how important it is for this event to continue in our community and internationally.”
Sponsors include WABC-TV, who has been a supporter for the past 11 years, along with MetroPlus Healthcare. Community support has also been provided by the Citibank Financial Group at 144th Street along with K&R Realty who has been a sponsor of the jazz exhibition series since 2004.
Additional events will continue until November include an exhibition of works on jazz, in conjunction with AHRC NY, featuring a 20ft long mural dedicated to the hit tune “A Night in Tunisia” created by adults with disabilities from the AHRC day program along with community residents and professional artists; a Taste of Art and Jazz™ Gallery and Restaurant Crawl and other planned events.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HARLEM BASED ARTS EDUCATOR AND JAZZ ENTHUSIAST TO HOST
THE 1ST ANNUAL VISUAL ART AND JAZZ DAY!
VISUAL ARTS AND JAZZFEST 2012—10TH ANNUAL
Harlem, New York, June 6, 2012 –Artist and curator Gwendolyn Black will once again present her highly anticipated cultural event: Visual Arts and Jazzfest 2012. This year marks the 10th Anniversary and the celebrations will kick off with a pre-festival event on Friday, June 15th 2012 for the 1st ANNUAL VISUAL ART AND JAZZ DAY at the Harlem Branch Library, 9 West 124h Street, between and 5th Avenue and Lenox Avenue, 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. The event will present and celebrate the visual arts through Jazz and give the public an opportunity to connect with the visual artists, gain further insight about jazz, its history and its important legacy.
Gwendolyn Black, who carved out a decades-long career as a painter, arts mentor and jazz enthusiast has teamed up with the New York City Public Library in Harlem, NY for what will be an annual Visual Art and Jazz Day for all ages. The event will feature, We Are All The Same Inside®, the book and accompanying Sage doll, created by the award winning author / illustrator Timothy D. Bellavia. The special arts workshop will celebrate a message of peace and harmony among all peoples while also embracing each other’s differences. Bellavia himself has toured over a hundred schools for well over a decade, and will be using his props to share with participants of the rich and diverse Jazz singers of our times.
The Visual Arts and Jazz Day, was developed to give audiences of all ages, particularly those who have not been exposed to the music, an opportunity to gain appreciation of jazz music and learn about the connection between the two art forms. “Fusing the arts through music is my favorite way to encourage children to do research outside of what they are exposed to … workshop after workshop I see participants become so eager to learn and I am so proud of them for that” said Black. “I am thrilled to be working with Gwendolyn again and I am excited that the participants will get a chance to honor a Jazz legend of the past or even of our own time through the We Are all the Same Inside – Sage doll-making workshop” added Bellavia.
The Visual Arts and Jazz Festival, now celebrating its 10th Anniversary, will run during the months of June - August 2012. The festival was developed to further bring to the public’s eye visual artists and their works dedicated to jazz and “bring together diversified audiences in diversified spaces.”™ The festival is highlighted with special events in Manhattan and Brooklyn and will include an outdoor fair on Saturday, July 14th at the Jackie Robinson Park at Bradhurst Avenue and 145th Street.
