About The Day My Brain Exploded
After a full-throttle brain bleed at the age of twenty-five, Ashok Rajamani, a first-generation Indian American, had to relearn everything: how to eat, how to walk and to speak. With humor and insight, he describes the events of that day (his brain exploded just before his brother’s wedding!), as well as the long, difficult recovery period. In the process, he introduces readers to his family—his principal support group, as well as a constant source of frustration and amazement. Irreverent, coruscating, angry, at times shocking, but always revelatory, his memoir takes the reader into unfamiliar territory, much like the experience Alice had when she fell down the rabbit hole. That he lived to tell the story is miraculous; that he tells it with such aplomb is simply remarkable.
More than a decade later he has finally reestablished a productive artistic life for himself, still dealing with the effects of his injury—life-long half-blindness and epilepsy— but forging ahead as a survivor dedicated to helping others who have suffered a similar catastrophe.

How Do You Know a Hero? Paper Crafts Workshop by Tim Bellavia at Greenwich Historical Society Sunday, November 13
Cos Cob, CT, --The Greenwich Historical Society will host a paper crafts workshop led by award-winning children's author, illustrator and educator Timothy D. Bellavia. How Do You Know a Hero? will challenge boys and girls to design their very own action figures by transforming plain templates into police officers, firefighters and paramedics. Kids will deck out their heroes with uniforms, badges and other pint-sized accoutrements replicated from objects and photos showcased in the Historical Society's current exhibition Everyday Heroes: Greenwich First Responders. They'll then set their creations' heroic feats against scenes from the exhibition.
The How Do You Know a Hero? workshop was designed to help kids understand the important role first responders play in daily life. This workshop is a new spin on Bellavia's well known franchise We Are All The Same Inside® workshop in which children create individual characters with the goal of learning to recognize our common humanity while embracing diversity.
$10 for members and $15 for nonmembers.
Workshops will be held at 1:00, 2:30 and 4:00 pm. Reservations required.

Please join the WAATSI * Sage doll-making workshop for the first SkowheganPERFORMS on Sunday, September 25th from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Socrates Sculpture Park.
Twenty-four alumni, spanning almost 15 summers of art-making at Skowhegan, will perform at various points throughout the afternoon around Socrates. Some performances will happen only once, others will be ongoing— all will be a great expression of the type of work that Skowhegan promotes and supports!

The WAATSI * Sage doll making workshop traveled to Washington D.C. Together we volunteered as well as made peace possible by setting camp at the Heartsongs / RED station at the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Park in Maryland. Several participants made their own Sage dolls in the likeness of peacemakers such as Yoko Ono, Gandhi, Jimmy Carter, Oprah, Nile Rodgers, Bono, and Mattie himself.
Other activities the the Heartsongs RED station included: "Expressing Heartsongs" with the We are Family Foundations / Mattie J.T. Stepanek magnet set and the "Peace in our Hands" project ...

AFTER RETURNING FROM WEST AFRICA TIMOTHY D. BELLAVIA AWARD WINNING CHILDREN’S AUTHOR AND EDUCATOR IS CONTINUING HIS LIFE LONG MISSION TO CELEBRATE COMMON HUMANITY - GLOBALLY.
New York, NY – May 24, 2011 – Today, Timothy D. Bellavia award winning children’s author / illustrator, educator and founder of The T.I.M.M.-E. Co. Inc. is celebrating our common humanity worldwide. During a recent visit in Sierra Lorne he made stops in Freetown, Lungi, Pepel, Lunsar, and Makeni and visiting five schools including: Hope Day School and the Marc Bolan School of Music and Film. When asked about his trip Timothy D. Bellavia said, “I have never been prouder to be an educator in my entire life, all the students I worked with throughout my trip had such a strong desire to learn, which made me feel even more passionate about educating the underserved.”
Mr. Bellavia traveled to Sierra Lorne with singer / songwriter Gloria Jones as part of The Light of Love Foundation. During the scheduled We Are All The Same Inside ® workshops, the acclaimed children's book and accompanying Sage doll were distributed to the children of Sierra Leone by artist and educator himself . The Sage doll-making workshop celebrates a message of tolerance among all peoples while also embracing each other’s differences. Bellavia himself has toured over a hundred schools over the last decade, using his props to teach human diversity to children, and picking up many awards along the way.
For the trip to Sierra Leone, Bellavia collected school supplies, and educational materials from Sesame Workshop, The Fashion Center and Bellavia’s own We Are All The Same Inside ® Sage doll-making workshop based in New York City.
Last year the Sage doll-making workshop celebrated a landmark ten years. To mark the anniversary, Bellavia teamed up with singer, songwriter and former Motown Records producer Sherlie Matthews to bring music to the Sage doll-making workshop. The collaboration resulted in the release of "We Are All The Same Inside: 10th Anniversary Commemorative Single” - which ranked nationally on children's music listings as did a special DVD, “The Inside Story.” Both media formats were shared and distributed to several educators of Sierra Leone.

I just returned from Sierra Leone and wanted to share some traveling tips to those who wish to fly off to Africa. Hope the list helps.

- Smile.
- Be prepared. Over prepare, if need be. Pack the following items: tissue, sunscreen, loose fitting clothes, a flashlight, and baby wipes.
- Carry cash, travelers checks and ALWAYS go with VISA. Master Card and American Express, DISCOVER are not always processed and / or accessible at ATMS, banks, etc.
- Wear a hat. It covers a multitude of sins such as dry and unconditioned hair.
- Be open and free ... we made lots of friends by being friendly.
- When eating breakfast, lunch or dinner be aware that some people around you are hungry. Save some portions and share ...
- If you don't like beer; entertain the idea of drinking it while you set up your African residency. Like your hat, beer is essential to your well being and health.
- Get your travel shots and malaria tablets. If possible, buy more malaria tablets than needed ... caring is some cases is sharing.
- Travel light -- ship your supplies and doll-making workshop essentials; as it gets costly when checking your HEAVY bags in the airport.
- Always have snacks on hand. We made lots of friends by sharing fruit roll-ups, goldfish and crackers and /or biscuits with the many of the children in Sierra Leone.

With recent news about clashing religions over the Ground Zero mosque controversy, online and campus bullying that leads to suicide, and continuing skirmishes about immigration and basic human rights, the We Are All The Same Inside ® - Sage doll-making workshop message is needed more than ever.
Award winning children's author, illustrator and educator, Timothy D. Bellavia says the only way to stop bullying and harassment of any adolescent or teen student is to teach diversity and tolerance at a young age. "The recent epedemic of hazing, beatings and the suicide of Rutger's University Freshmen Tyler Clementi is just devastating. His death is a reminder of how even in these seemingly progressive times - students think its okay to harass, humiliate and torment their peers because of they are seemingly different, but we are indeed all the same inside." According to a report, "More than 85 percent of teen students report of being harassed because of their sexual or gender identity, and more than 20 percent report of being physically attacked."
The Brooklyn Historical Society will host the 10th Anniversary edition book, CD & DVD launch party and Sage doll-making workshop on October 24, from 1 PM to 3 PM that will feature an exclusive, anniversary edition of the Sage doll that are all numbered and stonewashed specifically for this celebration. The Brooklyn Historical Society is located at 128 Pierrpont Street in Brooklyn Heights, NY.
All of the Sage dolls created for this event will honor notable people connected to Brooklyn. Participants of all ages, races, religions, creeds, genders, orientations will then have the chance to create their own Brooklyn Sage doll with hair, yarn, leather, rhinestones, beads and more! The event filled afternoon will also include a read aloud, book signings and special a musical performance by LOUIE.
Bellavia, author of "We Are All The Same Inside" series has devoted his life to spreading the message of acceptance. He too, was bullied as a teenager for being different. "Like many teens growing up; I lived for a day where I could exist without being tormented or harassed. Luckily, I was able to escape that by moving to Brooklyn and New York City - where human diversity is embraced." Bellavia created a diversity workshop where participants create dolls to recognize that despite our differences, ultimately - "We Are All The Same Inside."The reissued 10th anniversary edition of We Are All The Same Inside® includes a brand new, eye-popping cover and the original 32-page story, featuring the lovable and recognizable alien, Sage. Additionally, the book contains rare and unseen images, paper doll patterns and lesson plans that educators can use in their classes and parents and/or guardians can use at home to further illustrate the book's message.
Over the past decade, Bellavia has led hundreds of workshops in classrooms, museums, and colleges across the country. We Are All The Same Inside ®, the book and accompanying Sage doll, was created by artist and educator Timothy D. Bellavia, to celebrate a message of tolerance among all peoples - while also embracing each other's differences.
